Sri Meenakshi Government Arts College for Women, Madurai Tamil Nadu was established in the year 1965 as Government Educational Institute to provide higher education to build a career in the field of Management, Humanities, and Science. Sri Meenakshi Government Arts College for Women was established by the government of Tamilnadu in the temple city of Madurai in the year 1965, to fulfill the need for the upliftment of women in and around Madurai. Set in a sprawling campus of 16 acres, the college began its journey with 320 students and 13 teaching and 13 non-teaching staff members. Today, the college stands upgraded to Grade-I status and is well-placed among the 14 Grade-I colleges in the state of Tamil Nadu.

To identify skilled players the college has been organizing a District level Volleyball tournament for school girls on our campus. This has been organized for the past two years i.e. 2013 and 2014. To train the students in Martial Arts and Self Defense techniques like Taekwondo, Silambam, and Judo we outsource experts from outside the college.

Laboratories

The Sri Meenakshi Government Arts College for Women has a departmental-based laboratories facility for the students. The objective of CLP (Computer Literacy Programme) is to train non-computer science students in MS Office and Internet. The students are given hands-on training in the commonly used packages along with basic concepts of computers and help to update with the latest technology. NIIT was entrusted with the challenge of creating computer classrooms and conducting courses in 48 Government Arts and Science Colleges. This course will expose non-computer students to concepts of IT in a systematic way and make them computer literate persons, by which the student can pursue his/her professional goals.
