Sree Ayyappa College for Women was established in the year 1970. The institution was founded with the motto 'Siksha Dharmena Shobathe' (Education Sparkles through Moral Excellence) is managed by the Sree Ayyappa Educational Society. The Society was founded by the Malayalam native minority of the Kanyakumari District and registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1955 created a junior college exclusively for males in 1969. However, since the primary need was to provide female students to receive higher education as well, it was decided that the Management with the permission of affiliated Madurai University converted the institution into a women's university the following year. The college was given the status of a minority language in 1987. This is a blessing not only for the female students who are in the minority but also to students from all communities that are disadvantaged.

In order to promote the concept of learning continuously for students and increase their knowledge Our campus is equipped with a large library. Sree Ayyappa College Library building was inaugurated in February 1995 by Sri. P.K. Narayana Panicker, former President, Nair Service Society. It covers an expanse of 329.581 sq.m and houses an Internet resource centre.

The library is a rich collection of reference books, textbooks as well as encyclopedias and journals, dictionaries (national and international) newsletters and magazines, reprography, and a large assortment of video cassettes, and CDs that cover the latest questions that concern subjects.

The Library is spacious that allows the users to make the most of the information that is accessible. In keeping in the tradition of being an information centre, the option for Open Access System has been implemented, allowing the users direct access to the cabinets and can access the required reference.
