Sree Rama Government Polytechnic College at Thrissur was established in 1958 in the private sector but in 1972 the Kerala Government took over the Polytechnic and renamed it Sree Rama Government Polytechnic College.  

In 1991, the university participated in an international project called the Canada India Institution Cooperation Project organized by the Associate of the Canadian Community and the Canadian International Development Agency.  

The aim of the project was to strengthen the higher education system and create a healthy learning environment while improving the quality of education.
