Sri Muthukumaran Institute of Technology is a Self-financing Engineering college located on the Kundrathur main road at a distance of around 15 km from Chennai city. The Institution is approved by AICTE, New Delhi & affiliated to Anna University, Chennai. The Institute has got recognition from UGC under the 2(f) and 12(B) schemes. The Institution is accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with a B+ grade in the year 2018 and participated in the National Institute of Ranking Framework (NIRF) process. Our college has also participated in the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE). The college is in its 23rd year of illustrious functioning and contributing to the cause of Engineering & Management Education. The college has got state-of-the-art infrastructure and qualified & experienced faculty members. We offer 6 UG programs viz. B.E.-Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and B.Tech. Information Technology. The PG programs offered by us are M.E. – Applied Electronics, Power Systems Engineering, Embedded System Technologies, Computer Science and Engineering, Computer-Aided Design, Engineering Design, M.C.A-Master of Computer Applications, and M.B.A-Master of Business Administration. Two Research Centres, one in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and the other in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering are functioning with the recognition of Anna University to facilitate M.S. through Research and Ph.D. programs under Anna University. Five of the UG programs are accredited two times by NBA and we are in the process of getting reaccreditation.

Infrastructure and Facilities

Library:

The central library of SMIT is situated in a separate block with a total area of 990 sq.m. The Library has a collection of 48303 books, 10996 titles, 3374 CD-ROMs, 96 National Journals, 95 International Journals, an Internet browsing facility, Lending, Reference, and Reprographic facilities, and study halls with a capacity for 150 students. The library is fully automated with AUTOLIB software and has ample desktop computers to access e-journals & e-books. The library has also digital resources facilities for students and staff such as ASCE, ASME, DELNET & IEEE online journals.  Program-wise abstract of various books, journals, and e-resources available in the Library.

Gym:

Physical fitness centers (gymnasium) with all kinds of equipment like treadmills, Crossfit, dumbbells, and heavy weight lifting for both boys and girls.

Hostel Facilities:

Admission to the hostel is based on a First come first serve policy. Students who seek admission to this hostel, have to submit an application to the warden in a prescribed, form with a passport-size photograph affixed and duly signed by the student and parent/guardians.

Some Facilities of the Hostel:

The college offers a very comfortable living accommodation with separate hostels for boys and girls within the campus under the care of resident wardens. There is one hostel for boys and one for girls with enough space to accommodate the outstation students.

The college has separate hostel facilities for boys and girls with all amenities. Utmost care is taken to serve wholesome food. Adequate security arrangements have been provided for the safety and security of the inmates.

The girls’ hostel houses around 400 girls. It has an independent kitchen, mess, health equipment, and a common room with telephone facilities.

The boys’ hostel accommodates up to 750 boys with a separate mess, common room, etc. Considerable stress is laid on a clean and healthy environment.

The hostel provides hygienic and quality food to suit diverse tastes and preferences. A comfortable mess hall has also been provided. The hostel rooms are provided with tables, chairs, cupboards, beds, a common bath, and hot water facilities. The other common facilities include the availability of telephone and television.

Canteen:

There is a canteen facility for the benefit of students, staff, and visitors. Food is provided at subsidized rates. Apart from this, a fast food center, which is a part of the canteen is available.

Sports Facilities:

SMIT gives a lot of trust in the overall development of the students. As a part of the above, vital care is imparted in promoting sports activities throughout the year.

Sports and Games are an area much sought after by the student community of this college. Playgrounds, 400 meters athletic track, a swimming pool, and equipment for outdoor and indoor games facilities are available for meeting the enthusiasm of such students and faculty.

Students of this college have the honor of being frequently selected to represent Anna University in many teams. They have made remarkable achievements as winners and Runners – up ranging from the Inter–Collegiate to university level in games and athletic events and have retained the championship in the university division.

Apart from academics, the students are given enough opportunities to expose their hidden talents in sports and cultural events. The campus has a playground for outdoor games and indoor games like Cricket, Football, Hockey, Basketball, Volleyball, Tennis, Table Tennis, Ball – Badminton, Badminton, Chess, Table Tennis, and Carrom.

Admission

Higher Secondary Examination of (10 + 2) Curriculum (Academic Stream) prescribed by the Government of Tamil Nadu with Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.

Any examination of any other University or authority accepted by the syndicate of Anna University as equivalent thereto.

Higher Secondary Examination of Vocational Stream (Vocational groups in Engineering / Technology) as prescribed by the Government of Tamil Nadu.

Diploma in Engineering / Technology awarded by the State Board of Technical Education, Tamil Nadu, or any other authority accepted by the syndicate of the University as equivalent thereto.

The candidates who possess the Diploma in Engineering / Technology awarded by the State Board of Technical Education and Training, are eligible for admission to the third semester of the B.E. / B. Tech, Degree Programs in affiliated colleges through a lateral entry system.

The eligibility criteria such as marks, number of attempts and physical fitness and the mode of admission shall be as prescribed by the Syndicate of the University from time to time.

The candidate shall not have completed 21 years of age as of the first of July of the year of application. For candidates belonging to SC/ST the age limit is relaxable upwards by 3 years. Several appearances, minimum marks, and other criteria for admissions to B.E / B.Tech courses are as per AICTE and State government norms as follows. 

Placements

The training and Placement cell is dedicated to catering to the employment requirements as well as molding students with the correct skill sets desirable for getting employable. It actively functions under the leadership of a Director of Placement and Placement representatives from faculty and students from various departments. The training and placement cell facilitates the arrangement of recruiters from reputed multinational companies and organizations.
