Devagiri was created by the CMI Congregation and founded in 1956. Affiliated with Calicut University, St. Joseph College has been providing quality education for 66 years as one of the most prestigious arts and science schools in Malabar. According to its motto PRO DEO ET PATRIA (For God and Fatherland), the institution works assiduously to create a just and humane society, defending national integration and religious harmony, with particular attention to the enrichment of the poor and marginalized. In recognition of its academic, cultural, and community endeavors and achievements, the NAAC accredited the college with an "A" grade in 2004, and the institution was reaccredited in 2011 with a GPA of 3.63 on a four-point scale.

The College was recognized as a "College with Potential for Excellence" by UGC in 2010 and was conferred autonomy in the year 2014. Hostels: 

There are separate dormitories for men and women.
