St Mary's College, Shirva, Udupi was founded by Very Rev Fr Aloysius Rosario in 1980 to serve the higher education needs of rural youth. The college, a minority institution, is managed by The Catholic Education Society of Udupi Diocese at the apex and by a Governing Council at the local level. It is affiliated to Mangalore University. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council(NAAC), Bangalore has reaccredited it with a 'B' Grade. the Bishop of Mangalore established The Catholic Board of Education in 1932. Over the years the Board has grown to mammoth size and at present it runs professional colleges, general education colleges, nursery training and industrial training institutions, pre-university colleges, high schools and primary schools totalling over 242 in number in Udupi, Mangalore and Kasaragod Districts. St Mary’s College, Shirva under the Catholic Board of Education was founded in 1980 by the then Parish Priest of Our Lady of Health Church, Shirva Very Rev Fr A Rosario.

Two books are issued to students regularly for ten days. Book bank books are issued to the students on a semester basis. Apart from this, other reading materials like periodicals and popular magazines are issued to students on an overnight basis. University question paper files are maintained and lent for in-house reference.

Hostel:

A Women’s Hostel functions on the campus having a 42-member housing capacity. Presently it is occupied by 28 students. The hostel's dining room offers hygienic cuisine for every taste and preference, making it a real home away from home. Large lounges with LED TVs, newspapers, and magazines in each dorm block, and RO drinking water from its facility. Well-appointed rooms for occupancy with ensuite/shared bathrooms with all amenities.
