The college was founded by Dr. Joseph Attipetty, the late Archbishop of Verapo, to commemorate the historic visit of His Holiness Pope Paul VI. in India for the 38th International Eucharistic Congress held in November-December 1964. by His Holiness on December 3, 1964, and by Dr. Samuel Mathai, Chancellor of the University of Kerala, in the presence of His Excellency Dr. Joseph Attipetta celebrated with childlike devotion on February 13, 1965. His Holiness the Pope, the founder, wanted the College to bear the name of Saint PAUL, the Pope's heavenly patron saint. The college began operations on July 13, 1965, offering students a two-year preparatory course. 

St. Peter's College Kolenchery was founded in 1964 and is affiliated with Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam. It is an industry-supported arts and science college offering a co-ed education and administered by St Peter's College Trust, a corporation registered under the Travancore Cochin Literary, Scholarly and Charitable Societies Registration Act 1955.  Now the college offers thirteen UG-supported programs and two UG-supported programs, five PG-supported programs and one PG-supported program, and three research centers.
