The institute originally started in the year 1958 as Regional Family Planning Training Centre. In the year 1975, the institute was upgraded to Health & Family Welfare Training Centre. In the year 1991, it was upgraded to the "State Institute of Health & Family Welfare” (SIHFW). It became an apex training institute of the Health & Family Welfare Department, Government of Gujarat. The building was constructed near Sola Civil Hospital Sola, Gandhinagar - SarkhejHighway, during ‘Indian Population Plan –VII’ funded by the World Bank which was inaugurated in August 1998 by Honorable Home Minister of India Shri L.K. Advani. SIHFW shifted from its Sola building to civil hospital Gandhinagar on February 2010, as the building was given to the Medical College, Sola, Ahmedabad.

At present, SIHFW's New Building constructed at Old Ansuya Hospital Campus, near Sayaji Park, Ajawa Road, Vadodara e-inaugurated On 16 October 2017 by Honorable Minister of Gujarat Shri Shankarbhai Chaudhari and finally shifted this office to Vadodara in May-2018.
