Surendranath College for Women was established in 1948 primarily to provide higher education to girls from families affected by Partition. After partition, many families from what was then East Pakistan came and settled in and around Sealdah Railway Station. The girls had to work in the afternoons to support their families. This is how our university with the morning schedule came about. Even today, our ideal has remained the same. Many of our students come from extremely poor backgrounds and some come from families living below the poverty line. Our goal is to make them independent. Our college and all sister colleges were located in the same building at 24/2, Mahatma Gandhi Road, Kolkata – 700009. Surendranath College was originally known as Ripon College. It is named after the viceroy, Lord Ripon. After independence, it was renamed after its founder, prominent Congressman Surendranath Banerjee, who earned the nickname "Don't Give Up" for his tenacity and passionately anti-British articles in The Bengal, the newspaper he edited and published.
