Syamaprasad College, founded by Dr. Syamaprasad Mukherjee, came into existence in the city immediately after the end of World War II in 1945. It was then styled as Asutosh College of Commerce (evening section). So this college has its genesis in Asutosh College and has primarily been designed to meet the growing demand for higher education in Commerce among the employed youth. This Evening Section was delinked from Asutosh College and acquired the status of a full-fledged independent college in 1958 with a separate Principal and separate management (i.e. Governing Body) under instruction from University Grants Commission and with the approval & affiliation of the University of Calcutta. After the immature demise of Dr. Mukherjee, the ex-Vice Chancellor, Calcutta University resolved to perpetuate the memory of Dr. Mukherjee by renaming the college founded by him as “SYAMAPRASAD COLLEGE” in 1962.

Library:

We have around 19000 books and more books are in the stage of inclusion which will target the CBCS system introduced by the University of Calcutta in the year 2018 in undergraduate as well as post-graduate studies. 

Sports Complex:

The college has rich facilities for both outdoor and indoor games. Sports facilities are made available to all students under the program 'Games For All'. Students participate in football, cricket, rowing, and other athletic events. Existing facilities are continuously upgraded and improved.

Gym:

The College has a well-equipped gymnasium that has been set up with modern facilities and remains open for all the students throughout the day.

Scholarship

Kanyashree Prakalpa, launched by the Government of West Bengal on 1st October 2013, is a Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) Scheme that incentivizes the schooling of all teenage girls between the ages of thirteen and eighteen, simultaneously disincentivizing child marriage. The Scheme goes much beyond financial enablement - its communication strategy not only builds awareness of the scheme, but includes adolescent-friendly approaches like events, competitions, and Kanyashree clubs, and the endorsement of strong women figures as role models to promote social and psychological empowerment.

Swami Vivekananda Merit cum Means Scholarship, to assist the meritorious students belonging to economically backward families in the State of West Bengal to pursue higher studies, the Government of West Bengal introduces this scheme of giving scholarships at different levels of higher studies, at educational institutions based in West Bengal. The Swami Vivekananda Merit Cum Means Scholarship Scheme has been thoroughly revamped in the year 2016 to cover more students as well as to enhance the scholarship amounts significantly.

Career Guidance and Counseling Cell aims to guide and direct students to set their career goals and stimulate them to exercise their consistent endeavors to accomplish their career objectives. Keeping in view the competence, interests, and acquired knowledge of the students, it channels the young trainees to fetch lucrative specialized careers. Various sessions are conducted to evaluate the students based on their professional as well as interpersonal skills. The committee helps them to explore new knowledge and inculcate recent company attitudes among them as per the requirements of the globally competitive world. The Career Guidance & Counseling Cell is formed with the following members under the chairmanship of Principal/Vice-Principal/Teacher-in-Charge.
