The seed for the establishment and growth of TANUVAS was sown as early as 1876, when the Madras Veterinary College was started as an Agricultural School in Chennai to offer diploma and certificate course in the field of veterinary and animal sciences.
The roots and development of Tamil Nadu Veterinary & Animal Sciences University were established in 1876 when the Madras Veterinary College was founded to serve as an Agricultural School in Chennai to provide diploma and certificate programs in animal and veterinary sciences.
The institution became a college status of an institution by 1903 (01.10.1903) when it started activities from Dobbin Hall located in Chennai and was able to enroll 20 students in a three-year diploma program called the GMVC (Graduate of Madras Veterinary College). It also has two branches in Namakkal as well as Thoothukkudi. Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS), which is recognized through the University Grants Commission of India is a minor co-educational Indian college of higher learning.
