Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University is one of the few language universities in the country. It was established on 2 December 1985 by Act (Act No. 27 of 1985) as "Telugu University". It is headquartered in Hyderabad and has campuses in Sri Sailam and Rajahmundry. Later, in 1989, Siddhendra Kalakshetram from Kuchipudi joined the university. A School of Folk and Tribal Lore was established in Warangal in 1994. This university was established with the broad objective of serving the Telugu people both within and outside the state. For this purpose, the state government has affiliated Sahitya, Sangeetha, Nataka, Nritya, and Lalitha Kala Academies, International Telugu Institute, and Telugu Bhasha Samithi with the university. Thus, the university was established as a central organization for teaching and research in Telugu language and literature, history and culture, visual and performing arts, religion, and philosophy. It aims to instill in them a sense of identity as citizens of India and responsible representatives of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. This university was renamed Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University in 1998. The University Commission recognized the university as fulfilling the conditions to receive financial support from 02.05.1990.
