Thiagarajar College was founded on July 7, 1949. It was formally opened on October 12, 1949 by the King of Bhavnagar, who was the Governor of Madras State at the time. In the opening ceremony, the founder, Karumuttu Thiagarajan Chettiar, called this college a "Small and Humble Endeavor in Education". .Since its start, the college has been one of the top schools in Madurai. It began with only three undergraduate courses. Now, it has grown to offer 28 undergraduate, 12 postgraduate, 11 M.Phil, and 10 Ph.D. programs. It also has 13 diploma and 16 certificate courses. .The college is a private, co-ed institution. It is affiliated with Madurai Kamaraj University. The Kalaithanthai Karumuttu Thiagarajan Chettiar Memorial Trust carefully manages the college. The college's motto is "Wisdom and Love embody the Divine".
