The Directorate of Distance Education was established in 1996 to impart higher education through the distance mode with multi-media approach. As a non-formal, supplementary mode of education, distance education differs from the conventional formal system in the objective to reach the unreached, to include the excluded. Tripura University has consistently promoted Distance Education on approved UGC and Distance Education Council, New Delhi.
The Department of Distance Education was established in 1996 to provide higher education through distance learning using a multimedia approach. As an informal form of further education, distance learning differs from the conventional formal system with the aim of reaching the unreached by involving the marginalized. Tripura University has consistently promoted distance education as per the approved guidelines of UGC and the New Delhi Council of Distance Education to serve - 1. Students who have discontinued formal education due to financial and other circumstances. 2. Students live in geographically distant places. 3. Students who dropped out due to lack of aptitude and motivation but later became motivated. 4. Workers, housewives, etc. Currently, more than 3690 students are studying in the Department of Distance Education (DDE) which itself is proof of the popularity and credibility of the Distance Education Department of Tripura University among the general crowd. especially among public students.
