At a logical stage in this process of growth and development, these different Units of the College were converted with effect from June 11, 1961, into independent Colleges governed by separate Governing Bodies but under the ultimate control of a Central Council in matters of Policy, co-operation, and co-ordination. The Surya Sen Street branch has two units — Morning and Evening imparting instructions in B. Com. (Pass & Honours) courses. These Units were known as City College Commerce Department Surya Sen Street Evening Unit and Morning Unit. THE MORNING UNIT WAS SEPARATELY AFFILIATED WITH CU IN 1961 AS UMESCHANDRA COLLEGE. Though formed into a separate institution Umeshchandra College has retained the features of the Commerce Department and the provision of curricular and extracurricular facilities has been continued.

Infrastructure and Facilities of Umeschandra College

Library:

Umeschandra College was previously named City College of Commerce. The then City College of Commerce had two units – Morning Unit and Evening Unit. The Commerce Section of the College was inaugurated in the year 1939. In 1941-42, Morning classes were started. The two units had one Library which was the City College of Commerce Library. The Morning unit was separately affiliated with CU in 1961 as Umeschandra College. In the year 1964,  the Library was separated from the Evening unit.

The Umeschandra College Central Library is situated on the 1st Floor of the College. The College has an extended Campus in Salt Lake. A small Library was established there in 2011 as a branch Library of the Central Library. A manual Lending system was introduced in Campus Library in the same year. Besides the books Issue/Return system, all Library activities of the Campus Library are controlled by the Central Library of the UCC.

Class Rooms:

The main campus has spacious classrooms equipped with green/ black boards, tables, chairs, an adequate number of benches, lights, fans, large windows, and doors.

Common Room:

On the main campus, there is a large common room with indoor games facilities.

Seminar Hall:

We have a big seminar hall equipped with a projector, screen, microphone, adequate sitting accommodation and an AC machine.

Canteen:

There is a canteen in the college premises, where delicious, nutritious and mostly veg. items are sold at reduced prices.

Admissions of Umeschandra College

Prospective students and their guardians are requested to follow the guidelines given below carefully. College can not be held responsible for any mistakes occurring due to non-compliance on the part of either the guardians or their wards.

Only male candidates are eligible to apply to the main campus and both male and female candidates are eligible to apply to the extended campus

A candidate who has passed the higher secondary (10+2) or its equivalent examination under West Bengal h.s. council / isc/cbse/other board is eligible to seek admission to the 1st semester of the 3-year ( six semesters) b.a./B.Sc./B.Com. (Honours & General) course of studies provided she has also passed in English having full marks not being less than 100.

Candidates who have passed the higher secondary (10+2) vocational examination conducted by the west bengal state council of vocational education and Training shall be eligible to seek admission to the B.Com. (Honours) 1st semester of 3 years course of studies under this university. However, no candidate shall be allowed for admission after a lapse of more than 5 (five) years from the year of passing the previous qualifying examination. (explanation: the year of admission shall not be taken into account while calculating five years from the year of passing the previous qualifying examination).

For the purpose of determining eligibility for admission to the B.Com Honours /General course, aggregate marks, obtained at the prequalifying examination, shall be calculated by adding the marks in the top four subjects in order of marks, secured by a candidate. However, marks in compulsory environmental education/studies shall not be taken into account for the calculation of aggregate marks. If the subject “environmental science” is studied as an elective subject of 100 marks, it may be taken into account for the purpose of determining the aggregate marks.

A merit list will be prepared and published strictly on merit following the norms set by the college authority as per university rules.

Eligibility for making an online application, however, does not guarantee admission.

Marks obtained in painting, art, fine arts, and other non-allied subjects will not be taken into account.

Foreign students, including those from Bangladesh, must submit, in advance, students visa and other documents as are essentially required under the rules of the government of India / University of Calcutta.

It is the scholarship provided by the college authority to economically backward students. This scholarship is provided strictly to students who are economically poor. The students are required to provide the proper validation of their claim. The students are requested to contact the office of the college for further information.

The mission of the college has always been the development of the complete man. In the first half of the twentieth century, there was a great demand for university-level education in commerce to mitigate the large-scale unemployment problem and prepare the manpower required for industry, trade, and commerce.
