Shillong city, the capital of Meghalaya and the acclaimed abode of clouds has been traditionally known as the educational hub of North East India with its credible history of producing many scholars, intellectuals, and a flock of officers in all India services. In the course of time, it was obviously seen that the demand for educational institutions became tremendous since the erstwhile elite colleges gave access only to the best, and shut doors to the others.
Traditionally known as the center of learning of Northeast India, Shillong City, the capital of Meghalaya and the celebrated abode of the clouds, has a credible history of producing many scholars, intellectuals, and a body of officers from all Indian Armed Forces. Of course, over time it became apparent that the need for educational institutions was growing enormously, as what were once elite colleges only allowed entry to the very best and closed the door to the rest. There was an urgent need to create an institution that would welcome the poor and students from marginalized groups, especially minorities, and provide them with education in an environment that would guarantee all forms of special support and offer peace, tranquility, and security to all students.
Umshyrpi College, Shillong is Affiliated with the University of North Eastern Hill University and is Approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Recognised by University Grants Commission (UGC).
The College offers Courses in Undergraduate Programs Bachelor of Arts General (BA Gen.), (BA Hons.) Political Science, Certificate in Accounting, Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com.), Bachelor of Arts (BA Hons.) Education.
Umshyrpi College, Shillong has a large and well-maintained campus and offers a tranquil learning environment. The buildings are modern and equipped with the latest technology from Umshyrpi College, Shillong, which facilitates teaching and teacher development. The classrooms, units, and laboratories of the Umshyrpi College, Shillong are spacious, comfortable, and designed to ensure the highest quality of education. The library is excellent too, with a huge range of books, online resources, and knowledgeable librarians.
Computer room:
The college has taken a new step with the opening of the data center by Mr. P., a member of Lok Sabha.R. Kyndiah on June 17, 2002. This introduced the students of Umshyrpi College to the world of information technology and also gave the students another optional paper on computer applications. The computer center currently offers courses based on the MBOSE and NEHU curriculum for students in the 11th and 12th grades and students with a total student enrollment of more than 200.
Canteen:
The Mensa has excellent facilities for organizing cooking classes for students. It also offers excellent customer service with a variety of foods.
Library:
The university has a well-stocked library for students. The library also subscribes to national and international, local and national journals/magazines and newspapers, which are easily accessible to students. Questionnaires from the previous year are kept in the student library. Students are encouraged to use the reference library.
Conference room:
It has an excellent infrastructure that can accommodate 25 to 30 people at the same time. This is where the meetings of the departments and the board of directors take place.
Auditorium:
Umshyrpi College Auditorium was opened on 4 April 2011 by Janab Salman Khursheed, then Union Minister for Minorities and Water Resources, Government. India in the presence of the late C.Z. Ghafoor, then Chairman of the Board, and Janab Sayeedullah Nongrum (MLA), then Deputy Chairman, who is the current Chairman of the Board of Umshyrpi College. The award was also honored by Dr.Mukul Sangma, Distinguished Prime Minister, Government. by Meghalaya, Smti. Ampareen Lyngdoh, then Secretary of Education Govt. by Meghalaya, Shri F.W.Momin, then Minister for Urban and Rural Development and Irrigation, Government. from Meghalaya.
Umshyrpi College seeks to encourage the development of the individual’s intellect and character aimed at preparing students to face challenges in life.
In keeping with the motto “Haiya Allal Falah” (Come towards prosperity), the institution will strive to become a center of excellence, seeking prosperity morally and intellectually in an active and vibrant student-centered learning environment.
