The College was inaugurated in July 1910 under the name “The United Theological College of South India and Ceylon” as “a Christian College where students may obtain a sound theological education”. It was established through the cooperation of the London Missionary Society, the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society, The United Free Church of Scotland, the Arcot Mission of the Reformed Church in America, and the Trustees of the Jaffna College Funds and the S.P.C.K. in Scotland also gave their support. Interest in this ecumenical institution grew, and churches, missionary societies, and other organizations from various regions of India and from abroad joined with the founders in support of the College. In 1951 the Church Missionary Society and the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel became supporting bodies. The College had received help at various times from the Danish Lutheran Church and the friends of Dr. L.P. Larsen, the first Principal of the College, and in 1959 the Danish Missionary Society became a supporting body. In 1960 the Basel Evangelical Mission (now a member of the Association of Churches and Mission in S.W. Germany) and the Kolhapur Church Council joined the ranks, to be followed the next year by the church of South India, and in 1963 by the Mar Thoma Church. The Council of Y.M.C.A’s in India joined as a supporting body in 1967 and the Church of India, Pakistan, Burma, and Ceylon (now merged in the Church of North India) in 1969. Also in 1969, the Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church became one of the contributing bodies.

After the merger of Gurukul Lutheran College of Theology and Research Institute, the B.D., M.Th., of the combined Theological College. and with other graduate programmers in June 1971 several Lutheran churches and missions (Andhra Evangelical Lutheran Church), South Andhra Lutheran Church, Church of Sweden Mission, American Lutheran Church, American Lutheran Church - both now merged with the Evangelical Church of America, Evangelical Church. Indian Lutheran Church and the Leipzig Evangelical Lutheran Mission) came from the supporting bodies of the college. The Malankara Jacobite Syrian Church became an auxiliary body in 1979.

Facilities and Infrastructure

Residential Accommodations:

UTC has a women's hostel and a men's hostel where young ladies and undergraduate students stay. The common dining room of the hostel is in one of the small halls of the men's hostel. Earlier it was housed in the Mahatma Gandhi Guest House, which later was demolished and is being reconstructed.

Administrative Block:

The Administrative Block is UTC's main and oldest building. It consists of Head Office, Grants Office and Accounts Department, PRO Office, Reception, Certain Departmental Offices, and Faculty Lounge.

Tagore Hall:

Tagore Hall hosts programs and social services every Sunday at 6:30 pm. Faculty seminars and college meetings are held here. It is also available for NGO and church meetings.

Ranson Hall:

This is the hall located at the entrance of the college. It has a capacity of 350 seats and the stage and room are on both sides of the hall. It has formal college functions and is also suitable for wedding parties.

Chapel:

The UTC Chapel, called the Ziegenbalg Chapel, has services every working day from 8:30 a.m. to 8:50 a.m. Most religious services are held here.

JRC:

Chandran Memorial Building is the academic block of the college. It has all BD and MTh classrooms, two halls, office space, a language lab, a video room, and a studio.

Book Shop:

The UTC Bookstore is located at the entrance of the college and stocks both university and non-university publications. It is open in the afternoon and whenever needed. Those interested in purchasing books can contact the office. The bookstore has various books and bhajan/audio CDs brought by the college.

Creche:

The college has a nursery for the children of students and the neighborhood. The kindergarten serves the needs of young children just before they go to regular school.

Guest House:

The UTC hostel is called the Ecumenical Resource Center (ERC). It is designed for guests of the college and those who wish to stay for academic purposes, exchange programs, and also for sightseeing. It was inaugurated on September 25, 1999. It also has a conference room and two seminar rooms that are used for local, national, and international conferences. The ERC is located in the heart of the UTC campus, within walking distance of the Bangalore Cantonment Railway Station. The building was specially designed to meet the growing needs of churches and NGOs looking for reasonable, well-equipped, and comfortable premises for their meetings and conferences. The room's location amidst greenery gives a festive feeling of closeness to nature and offers guests a meditative and peaceful atmosphere. Parking is available and airport taxis can be called from the ERC office. Volvo buses leaving the airport stop on Miller Road, which is in front of the UTC gate.

Library:

The UTC library is one of the largest theological libraries in Asia and India. The well-furnished library building has a built-up area of ??over 43,000 square meters, with light-filled, spacious, and airy reading rooms on one side and stacks on the other.
