The University of Ladakh was established in 2019 under Law no. LVI of 2018, with the aim of promoting higher education in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The university is comprised of six existing colleges, located in Leh and Kargil, and offers quality undergraduate and postgraduate education. The college serves schools and colleges throughout the state, which covers fifty thousand square kilometers. The university has recently received government backing for its mission. The government is establishing a development corporation to provide a variety of opportunities for young people living in Ladakh. The proposed university will offer liberal arts and basic sciences degrees and not medical or engineering degrees. The establishment of the university will improve access to higher education and increase opportunities for students in the region.

Having been established in 2019, the University of Ladakh is a trans-Himalayan Institute of higher learning with campuses in Leh and Kargil.
