Museum:

N.B.U. The Akshaya Kumar Maitreya Heritage Museum, which houses the collection of the Raja Rajaram Museum, had a very humble beginning in 1962. The growth achieved in these few decades is commendable. It was originally developed from the generous suggestions of Nirmal Chandra Chowdhury and Santipriya Raychaudhuri. They donated their lifetime collections to the university for a scholarship. The faculty members of the Department of History, University of North Bengal have helped the organization by paying unremitting attention to its development. However, it was only in February 1965 that it was partially opened only to the curious public really interested in some kind of historical research. It was opened to the public only on 28 December 2006 when it was moved to a new building and was officially inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of West Bengal.

The museum has become a cultural repository for the people of the northern regions of West Bengal. It is the most useful representative of the material culture of the region. A visit to a museum is both enlightening and rewarding. This creates a sense of togetherness among the residents of this area. The museum plans to be a major addition to the overall map of museums in India and abroad. It now has an excellent collection and extensive display of antiques. Most of these antiquities were acquired and collected from the regions of North Bengal. Most of them belong to the Pala-Sena School of Sculpture. The museum can also be used as a repository for the study of Pala-Sena images, besides portraying the socio-cultural life of the people of undivided North Bengal from a historical perspective.

Furthermore, we firmly believe that visual history can form a bridge between the distant past and the vibrant technological present. Finally, our mission is to inform our esteemed readers and scholars that North Bengal has a wider history and a stronger claim to be a part of national history.
