The Aryavaidya Patasala was started in the year 1917 at Calicut by Late Vaidyaratnam P.S.Varier, the founder of Arya Vaidya Sala and was run by the Arya Vaidya Samajam, a registered society. The Patasala was financed by the Arya Vaidayasala, Kottakkal. A four years course leading to the diploma ‘Arya Vaidyan’ was conducted. In 1924, the Patasala was shifted to Kottakkal with a view to give practical training to the students in the Arya Vaidya Sala Charitable Hospital.

The Arya Vaidyan course was abolished in the year 1958 and ‘Diploma in Ayurvedic Medicine (D.A.M) course was introduced. In 1959, the Aryavaidya Patasala was upgraded to an Ayurveda College. The new course (D.A.M) was of four years duration followed by an internship training of six months.
In 1972, the Ayurveda College, Kottakkal was affiliated with the University of Calicut and a new course, Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine (B.A.M), was started. The B.A.M course had a duration of 5 years followed by internship training for six months. The minimum qualification required for admission to the B.A.M. course was a pass in pre-degree with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as main subjects.There is a central Library attached to the College having an exhaustive collection of 26506 books, 700 Reference Books, 25 Journals, 1662 Journals Back Issues and 492 CDs, and 302 theses including some of the rarest books in Ayurveda. The Library is fully digitalized by the e-Granthalaya software provided by the NIC, Malappuram. The Library has also attached Intranet facilities for the use of students and teaching faculties. Space is provided for the review of current National and International Journals. In addition to the Central Library, all the departments are provided with department libraries.
Book Bank Scheme has been implemented in the College Library exclusively for Schedule Caste and Schedule Tribe students with financial assistance from the Government of India, Ministry of Welfare. Almost all the fundamental books for the course have been provided in the book bank.Criya is set into function in the year 1998 with a goal to formulate a two-hand curative science blending the two age-old life sciences – Ayurveda and Yoga. In today’s hectic world, human beings neglect their health in the mad run to earn their bread failing to understand that they are compromising their efficiency and lifespan. Unknowingly, they violate the laws of nature that govern the harmony between the mind and the body. The increase in the prevalence of psychosomatic diseases like asthma, diabetes, allergy, depression, backache, hypertension, etc has been evidently proven now. Management of psychosomatic disorders through Ayurveda and Yoga has been greatly recognized. Criya is a platform that helps patients to get an insight into their ailments and means to correct themselves.
