Vasantdada Sugar Institute (VSI) formerly known as Deccan Sugar Institute, is an autonomous body that is a society registered under the Societies Registration Act, of 1860 and under the Bombay Public Trusts Act, of 1950. Established in the year 1975 by the sugarcane grower members of cooperative sugar factories in the State of Maharashtra, it is the only organization of its kind in the world. The Institute performs, under one umbrella, all scientific technical, and educational functions relevant to the sugar industry.

Courses Offered

Vasantdada Sugar Institute courses are offered at various levels like Diploma Degrees i.e Diploma in Mechanical, Civil, Computer Science, etc., Undergraduate Degree i.e BBA, BCA, B.Com, B.sc, etc., Postgraduate Degree i.e MBA, MCA, M.com, M.Sc., etc., Law Degree i.e. BA-LLB, LLB, etc., Pharmacy Degree i.e. B.Pharm, D. Pharma and Doctoral levels and many more. Facilities and Infrastructure

1. An administrative building housing a well-equipped auditorium with a seating capacity of 300, a contemporary seminar hall with a seating capacity of 100, a well-equipped boardroom, and an open-air theatre.

2. Student’s laboratories (69,000 sq. ft.).

3. Student’s hostel and guest house (55,000 sq. ft.).

4. Contemporary sugarcane tissue culture laboratory – the biggest of its kind in the country (15,000 sq. ft.) with greenhouses (16,000 sq. ft.).

The Institute has a well-furnished hostel having the capacity to accommodate 350 Students. Facilities such as a mess, recreation hall, and sports are available in the hostel. The hostel is compulsory for all students.

The library at VSI houses over 18,000 books and reference materials with information related to Sugar technology, science, engineering, and also the allied fields

VSI has modern laboratories, accredited by NABL, for agriculture, chemistry, sugar technology, alcohol technology, molecular biology, genetic engineering, electronics & computer as well as instrumentation.

Admission

The admission to M.Sc. and PG Diploma programs at this Institute is done on the basis of marks scored in the entrance test conducted by the University. Final selection is granted on the basis of a personal interview. Candidates can apply for admission offline.

Placements

The Institute is in touch with many sugar industries, machinery manufacturers, allied industries and distilleries, etc. for placement of potential candidates. A placement cell at the Registrar Section constantly interacts with the industry for placements. The students can find employment and build their careers in sugar mills; distilleries; Government Organizations; research institutes; academic institutes; consultancy organizations etc.

Mission -

VSIs mission as an R&D Organization is to bring about improvement in the socio-economic status of sugarcane grower farmers through research by providing them with new and cutting-edge technologies by undertaking or helping to carry on research and other scientific work in connection with the trade or industry related to sugarcane/ sugarbeet or other sugar bearing plants, sugar by-products and allied industries in India.
