The university was originally established under the South Gujarat University Act, 1965 passed by the Gujarat State Legislative Assembly. It became functional from the academic year of 1966 and was incorporated as a University on 23 May 1967. Recognized by the University Grants Commission in 1968.
Veer Narmad South Gujarat University ( VNSGU) is now more than 50 years in age. The institution is a key participant in the education and education movement throughout south Gujrat. It has also produced many notable graduates over time. It has notable alumni such as Ahmad Patel, Phoolchand Gupta, Dhawnil Parekh, and Esha Dadawala, among others. In addition, the institution is accredited with a grade of "A" by NAAC moreover the university. The university has continuously improved its standings and courses. The university currently offers up to 408 different courses on a wide subject.
Veer Narmad South Gujarat University ( VNSGU) is approved by the Recognised University Grants Commission (UGC), National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), and Bar Council Of India (BCI), Council of Architecture (COA), Indian Nursing Council and Indian Association of Physiotherapy.

It was ranked at 219th in India and 285th in South Asia by Webometrics Ranking Web of Universities in 2019.

VNSGU provides a broad range of undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as integrated and research levels within the fields of Engineering, Science, Arts and Management courses in various disciplines.
Infrastructure
Library
The library at the university can be utilized with an unending number of resources. Additionally, it has sources such as case studies, journals research papers, books, electronic books, e-journals and more. When it comes to volumes, the university houses over 1.97 millilitres of books. 779 journals and other files. The university offers resources through its digital library platform, as well. The library is well-equipped with a good seating capacity. There are libraries organized by the department at the University as well.
Hostel
VNSGU is a clean and tidy hostel, which means the hostels are clean. Furthermore, the University is home to separate hostels for girls and boys. Seven blocks of hostels are available to girls and boys, and six for both. The capacity for housing in the hostel is approximately 830 residents. Clean water and spaces are also provided in the hostel.
Sports
The indoor space for games such as carrom, chess, etc. is on offer at the campus. In addition, the university offers a playground where students can engage in sports like volleyball, cricket, football and more. The school is home to an international standard synthetic track, too. It also has a basketball court on campus.
Labs
The university has a variety of laboratories within its premises. The labs are accessible in different ways to the different departments of study. They are equipped with the latest equipment and meet the standards. The labs include Animal Cell Culture Lab, Bioprocess Lab along with Computer Lab among other labs.
Other Facilities
Other facilities like the Health centre, indoor sports area, Canteen Seminar hall, conference hall auditorium, guest house, and seminar hall are also available.

Students can complete the application form to apply for all the classes that are offered by VNSGU through their official website.
A valid score from NEET UG is needed to be admitted into an MBBS program. Students need to be eligible in NEET PG to be eligible for MD as well as MS programs.
MBA admission is dependent on the CMAT score, followed by the process of counselling.
To be able to offer BFA as well as BID classes, VNSGU conducts Fina Arts Entrance Test and Interior Design Entrance Test and Interior Design Entrance Test, respectively.
The final admissions process is determined by being able to pass the test specific to the course and interview, followed by counselling depending on the situation.
It is possible to get admission into M. Phil and PhD are granted on the basis of a written exam including Viva-voce, Test of Knowledge and Presentation.
