Visakha Government Degree College for Women is located in the city of Visakhapatnam in the state of Andhra Pradesh. It is a mere coincidence that the college was started in International Women’s Year 1975. A college exclusively for women in this city became a reality in the year 1975 due to the constructive, relentless, and conscious efforts of Sri. Singavarapu Surya Rao is a freedom fighter and philanthropist. Understanding the need for an educational institution exclusively for women in one of the major cities of Andhra Pradesh, he left no stone unturned to fulfill the dreams of many girl students to get empowered through quality education.

Facilities and Infrastructure:

Hostel

An on-campus residence facility is provided in the college. The second highest population category of student population i.e. SC students have been accommodated in the college-attached hostel which is maintained by the social welfare department. Further, for the first highest category i.e. OBC students, there are many BC hostels surrounding the college. The atmosphere in these residence hostels committee frequently visits the college-attached hostels and takes feedback from the students which helps them to look after the families of the residents. After taking admission to the college students can apply for hostel accommodation on the same day.

The Library

Visakha Government Degree College Central Library was established at the inception of the college in 1975 with a small collection of 25 books in printed format. It is located as a separate building recently constructed and funded under the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) scheme by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India in 2016. The library is equipped with a fire alarm and CCTV surveillance. The Central Library provides services for the retrieval and use of print and electronic collection of resources with adequate infrastructure and open space for reading called a green library. The Library is open from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm on all working days.

Canteen

Visakha Govt Degree College for Women has well-monitored services and the canteen is one among them. As the canteen plays a huge role in a student’s life it is taken care of at the campus with spacious seating arrangements and proper ventilation facilities.

The kind of food snacks and beverages available in the college canteen gives a refreshing break to students as well as staff from their hectic schedule. Canteen houses varieties of chips, chocolates, ice creams, soft drinks, and snacks like samosa, puffs, noodles, cakes, and beverages like tea, coffee, and green tea. All three items are available at affordable prices. It gives a great experience to students in their leisure time.

Health Centre

Periodical check-up for the students is conducted by a lady doctor who attends to the health problems of the students. Blood grouping and Haemoglobin percentage of the girls are conducted at the beginning of the year as a health awareness measure.
