From a cozy, family set-up - a small place that was essentially a home away from home- the college has grown to become our pride and joy. Today as we stand at the dawn of a new millennium, certain memorable dates and events flash before our eyes that were milestones in the life of our beloved institution. Vivekananda College for Women, established in 1961, is an undergraduate and postgraduate women's college in Barisha, Calcutta, West Bengal India. It is affiliated with the University of Calcutta.

Infrastructure and Facilities

Seminar Hall:

There are two seminar rooms, one seminar room cum auditorium (small), and an open-air theater in the college. The seminar rooms are well arranged with a digital projector, high-end sound system, podium, dias, and air-conditioners. Nibedita Sabhaghar has a sitting capacity of a hundred and Rabindra Sabhaghar has a sitting capacity of sixty. The auditorium is small (sitting capacity of hundred and fifty) but well equipped with an air-conditioning machine, proper screen, sound system, make-up room, and toilet facility. The open theater is at the corner of the open space of the college. Occasionally when weather is suitable this is used for college functions.

Laboratories:

All lab-based departments are facilitated with enough space, all required instruments and modern teaching aids like smart board, camera cum projector more than one laboratory attendant and instructor where necessary. 

Common Room:

There is a well-decorated large spacious common room for the students with a games room and the most modern toilet facilities. The common room has a sitting capacity of one hundred and twenty with fifteen large tables, facilitating the students to spend their leisure hours happily according to their wishes. The games room is adjacent to the common room with the facility of playing table tennis and carom board. This room is also very airy and spacious. The student forum has its office in one corner of the common room.

Canteen:

The college canteen is one of subsidized nature and the subsidy comes from the college only. The college appointed two temporary staff to run the canteen with help from other group D staff. The canteen runs on a no-profit no loss basis and the basic infrastructure and roll-on capital are provided by the college authority.

The college aims at the academic, intellectual, moral, and economic uplift of students. Mental alertness, cultural exposure, physical fitness, secular outlook, crisis management, and intellectual resourcefulness are some of the qualities it seeks to imbue in students.
