Vivekananda College, originally known as Barisha College, was established in 1950 as part of a state government dispersal plan to alleviate pressure to admit students to colleges in metropolitan Kolkata as people poured in from what was then East Pakistan, now Bangladesh. Originally housed at Barisha High School, it was later moved to newly constructed premises near the school complex in 1953. It was a middle school then. 

In June 1956 the College was sponsored by the Provincial Government with upgrading to an Associate Degree and in the same year it was also included with the Provincial Government in the Refugee Education Scheme of the Department of Rehabilitation of the Government of India. stay in control. Vivekananda College Library: 

The advent of the printing press in 15th-century Europe brought human civilization to its majestic zenith. The power of printed words began to dominate the scientific world. The art of printing proves useful because it facilitates the dissemination of useful books. In his work Making a Book, Lucien Favre showed how books required the creation of libraries. Eventually, libraries became a source of knowledge that reflected the many voices of civilization. 

In modern times, the library has become the most important part of any stronghold of knowledge. Vivekananda College is no exception. The university library reflects a fascinating combination of tradition and modernity. The library has around 40,000 books in the fields of literature, history, philosophy, natural sciences, social sciences, economics, and management. It also contains many manuscripts. While the library prioritizes its collections, it does not ignore modern technology. The entire library has recently been computerized and digitized and the Inflibnet service has been made available to all who are interested. The library also has a spacious reading room, which is not common at most colleges. The library's mission is to instill wisdom with humane values in all students. 

Computer Centre: 

The college introduced the computer training program in November 1995. Students and graduates of these and other universities are entitled to computer education in a variety of courses at moderate prices. The college, in fact, enjoys now the rare distinction of catering to the educational needs of a composite section of young learners belonging to both the urban middle class of the southern suburbs of Kolkata and the rural poor of South Bengal to hold high our inner motive force 'Tomoso ma jyotirgamoy' i.e 'from darkness, lead us to the light'.
