- Master’s Degree: You must have a Master’s degree or equivalent from a recognised university or institution.

UGC NET Eligibility Criteria 2026: Educational Qualifications
According to the UGC NET eligibility, applicants must meet some educational qualifications to appear in the UGC NET exam 2026. The educational qualifications for UGC NET 2026 are mentioned below:
- General/ unreserved/ General-EWS candidates should have at least 55% marks in their Master's degree/ equivalent exam (MA, M.Sc, M.Com, M.Tech, MBA, etc.). OBC/ SC/ ST/ PwD/ other gender groups should have at least 50% marks in their Master's degree / equivalent exam to attempt this test.
- Candidates appearing for their Master's degree, or candidates who have taken the qualifying master's degree or candidates whose qualifying exam has been postponed, are also eligible to take this exam. Such candidates should finish their Master's degree within 2 years of the date of the UGC NET results.
- Third gender category candidates will face the lowest subject-wise cut-off among other lower categories.
- Only the candidate should come to the subject of Post-Graduation.
- The candidates who have passed a 4-year bachelor's degree program should have 75% marks. Relaxation to the extent of 5% marks or equivalent may be provided to backwards class candidates ( SC/ST/OBC).
- Applicants who are still studying a 4-year bachelor's degree can also apply for the exam. But the applicants shall be given the JRF/admission to Ph.D only after satisfying some conditions.
- Applicants who are studying a Bachelor's degree can opt for the subject of their choice in the UGC NET exam in the subject where they wish to go for their Ph.D.
UGC NET 2026 Eligibility Criteria: Subject Relevance (Masters)
Candidates, while filling the application form for UGC NET 2026, should ensure that they choose the test for the subject studied by them during post-graduation. - Those candidates who were qualified for the UGC/CSIR JRF examination before the year 1990 are not required to appear for the UGC NET 2026 exam.
- Those candidates who have cleared the State Eligibility Tests (SETs) before 2002 are also exempted from the UGC NET 2026 exam. But such candidates will be required to apply for the Assistant Professors in the Universities/Colleges of their respective states, wherein they have cleared the SET.
