About Central Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering & Technology

Founded in 1968, the Central Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering & Technology (CIPET), formerly known as the Central Institute of Plastics Engineering & Technology, was established in Chennai by the Government of India with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The institute's primary goal was to cultivate expertise in various aspects of Plastics Engineering & Technology, filling a gap as no similar institution existed in the country at that time. The International Labour Organization (ILO) acted as the executing agency for this initiative. Between 1968 and 1973, CIPET successfully achieved its initial objectives, earning recognition as one of the most successful UNDP projects worldwide.
