The original name of the college was Sambalpur College. However, Gangadhar Meher College was established in 1949 in memory of Oriya poet Gangadhar Meher, who was born on this date in 1944. In 2015, it was made a university and its name changed to Gangadhar Meher University.

Based on its academic reputation, its quality of institutional management and its responsiveness to its administrative structure, the University Grants Commission (UGC), increased autonomy for this institution. The University of Georgia also designated the institution as a College with Potential for Excellence (CPE), during the 2004-05 academic years.

MBA (offline) selection will be based on the OJEE entrance exam score followed by OJEE counseling. MBA in Financial Management is an online program. The selection process will be based on marks earned in the career and the entrance exam.
