The Gauhati University Centre for Distance and Online Education (GUCDOE) formerly known as the Postgraduate Correspondence School (PGCS), was established in May 1998 to provide quality higher education opportunities to a large number of students unable to continue their studies in traditional ways. Education.  IDOL strives to accommodate students who are unable to attend due to various factors such as B. limited places in the high schools, enforced restraint, etc., cannot enroll in the traditional higher education system, and aims to provide quality education in an intellectually challenging environment. The Institute of Distance Education and Open Learning (IDOL) completed its 19th anniversary in May 2017 and intends to continue its mission of disseminating and delivering quality education to students.  Beginning with 514 students and 6 courses in May 1998, IDOL is now growing across the board, enrolling over 15,000 students in multiple programs in a learning environment equipped with the latest technology.

The IDOL Library was established to develop relevant collections in different areas to meet the needs of the diverse reading communities in the institution. The IDOL Library is one of the most important core facilities of the institution and currently has nearly 6,500 volumes including textbooks, encyclopedias, and non-book materials such as dissertations, CD-ROMs, DVD-ROMs, etc.  For cleaning work, IDOL Library uses SOUL ( Software for University Libraries)provided by the INFLIBNET Center, IUC of the University Grants Commission (UGC).
