The Indian School of Mines was formally opened on 9th December 1926, by Lord Irwin, the then Viceroy of India to address the need for trained manpower related to mining activities in the country with disciplines of Mining and Applied Geology. In 1967 it was granted the status of a deemed to be university under Section 3 of UGC Act, 1956. Since its establishment, IIT(ISM) has undergone considerable expansion of its activities, and presently it can be considered as a total technology education institute.
The Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) IIT (ISM) has a beautiful green campus that covers 218 acres. Dhanbad was founded in 1926 to meet the needs of manpower in the mineral and coal industries. It was founded by the British Indian Government in order to replicate that of the Royal School of Mines in London and with the intention of transmitting British mining-related education.
As a result of their significant importance in mineral exploration and in the mining industry, IIT (ISM) was granted autonomy in the year 1967 by the government of India. At the present, IIT(ISM) includes 18 departments of study that include engineering and applied sciences, humanities as well as social sciences and management. In light of the change in the academic reputation of the university In 2016, it was designated an Indian Institute of Technology. The title was changed from ISM Dhanbad to IIT (ISM) Dhanbad.
