Founded on September 1, 1954, seven years after independence, Pragjyotish College has become a beacon of learning and a symbol of the aspirations of Assam's common people to build a new nation.  Pandit Tirthanath Sarma, an eminent scholar, and man of letters responded and took an active part in nation-building by assuming the position of founder and rector of Pragjyotish College.  From its humble beginnings as an art college, Pragjyotish College has grown into one of the top higher education institutions in Guwahati. Currently, it is a respected, full-fledged graduate university offering multidisciplinary higher education. 

Pragjyotish College is situated on the west bank of the Bharal, a creek in western Guwahati, about 1 kilometer from its confluence with the mighty Brahmaputra. It is approximately 4 km from Guwahati Railway Station and approximately 20 km from Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport. In the background of the college, there is a beautiful panoramic view of the Nilachal hills, the famous residence of the mother goddess Kamakhya.

Library: 

The library was founded in 1954 by Pandit Tirtha Nath Sarma, the librarian-turned-principal, in a small room next to his office at Sonaram HS School containing only 150 books.  The College Library was dedicated and named after Pandit Tirtha Nath Sarma, the main founder and renowned scholar. In 1963 the library operated in one room with a collection of 700 books. Continuing the development process, the library received its own building in 1991. At that time, the library collection included almost 35,000 volumes. The library currently has 60,300 books. From the beginning of its existence, the university library has endeavored to support students and teachers in the teaching-learning process as best as possible. Our library is very rich in newspapers and magazines. Now the library works intelligently thanks to RFID technology.

Girls' house: 

This hostel is located on a college campus. Hostel behavior is governed by the Hostel Advisory Board. Students in UG and PG classes can stay in the hostel. In the girls' house, there is a caretaker who takes care of the day-to-day running of the home. Dorm residents take free self-defense courses at the college.
