Sri Jagannath Sanskrit University is one of the three Sanskrit universities in the country, established on 7 July 1981 at Puri, Odisha. It was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister and great Sanskrit scholar Janaki Ballabh Patnaik. It is committed to the revival and propagation of Sanskrit and Indian knowledge systems and has under its control 167 Upashastri (+2 level) and 138 Shastri (+3 level) Sanskrit colleges in Odisha, of which 94 are permanently affiliated. The university also has several programmes such as Shastri (B.A.), Acharya (M.A.), Shiksha Shastri (B.Ed.), Vishishtacharya (M.Phil.), Vidyavaridhi (Ph.D.) and D.Litt and these are offered in the departments of Veda, Vyakarana, Sahitya, Nyaya, Dharmashastra, Jyotirvigyan, Sarvadarshan and Advaita Vedanta. The Centre is the source of notable research in the field and has the magazine "Sri Jagannatha Jyothi".
