Syamsundar College was founded by the late Raibahadur Bisalaksha Bose, the esteemed social worker of the village Shyamsundar, Dist. Burdwan on 12th August 1948. Former ministers of the Govt. of West Bengal Abdus Sattar, Kalipada Mukherjee, and Prafulla Chandra Sen and renowned freedom fighters such as Jadabendra Nath Panja helped a lot in establishing the college at Shyamsundar. P. C. Sen, the former Chief Minister of West Bengal was selected as the first President of the Governing Body of the college. Mr. Shib Mohan Bose, the highly qualified son of Mr. Bose had been appointed as the first Principal of the college.

Infrastructure and Facilities

Library:

Syamsundar College Library was started along with the establishment of the institution in 1948 to cater to the academic and research needs of the faculty, students, and non-teaching staff.  But the systematic Accession Register was started in 1957. 

The library is situated on the 1st floor of the Golden Jubilee Bhaban. Books are well arranged and organized according to Class No.  Manuscripts, Rare Books, and Confined books are separated from general stock. The books are classified according to the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) 22nd edition with extreme care to the subject matter. Recently purchased books are being updated on the day to day basis through Library Management Software KOHA.  Moreover, books relating to different competitive examinations for career/services, general knowledge, and other documents are separately available.  The shelf space including the working space of the library is   3894.8 sq. ft. Two computers are connected with LAN in the library for OPAC. On the 2nd floor of the library has a beautiful reading hall with 50 seating capacity for students and teachers. Here two computers are available for providing internet facilities to the users. Security system like surveillance camera has been installed in the library.

All Honours departments are also equipped with Departmental libraries containing the books commonly needed by the students of the subject. Reading and lending facilities as appropriate are available in the Departmental Libraries. The Departmental library’s collection of books generally consists of specimen copies from publishers and loans from the Central Library. Departmental libraries are constantly used by the teachers and regular students of that department only for the enhancement of teaching and learning.

Admission

Syamsundar College offers admission to B.A., B.Sc, and B.Com degrees in general and honors under Science, Commerce, and Arts streams. Syamsundar College Admissions to all the courses are granted based on merit in previous qualifying exams ie class 12 examination. 

BA admission and BSc admission are offered to candidates having passed 10+2 or any equivalent exam from a recognized board with the subject opted for honors as a compulsory subject.

Admission to B.Com is granted to candidates based on merit. The required eligibility criteria are candidates must have passed the Higher Secondary Examination or its equivalent 10+2 exam from a recognized board in the relevant stream.
