Distance and Open Learning represent a distinctive approach to delivering education to students who face spatial and temporal separation from teachers or educational institutions due to various socioeconomic, cultural, and other factors. Recognizing the significance of this methodology, the University of Mumbai took the initiative and established its Directorate of Correspondence Courses in 1971-72. This Directorate evolved into the Institute of Distance Education in 1993, thereby elevating its status to that of a 'University Institution'.
