Velammal Engineering College, located in Chennai, is a renowned institution with the prestigious approval of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and an ISO certification. It holds the distinction of being the first non-minority self-funded engineering college to achieve ISO certification, accredited by TUV Germany. The college has been granted reaccreditation by the National Accreditation Board (NBA) of AICTE for multiple branches, valid for three years from 2019. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council is a government organization in India that assesses and accredits Higher Education Institutions. It is an autonomous body funded by the University Grants Commission and headquartered in Bangalore.
The National Board of Accreditation (NBA) is one of the two major bodies responsible for accreditation of higher education institutions in India, along with the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). NBA accredits technical programmes, such engineering and management programmes, while NAAC accredits general colleges and universities. NBA is a full member of the Washington Accord.
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is an international non-governmental organization made up of national standards bodies; it develops and publishes a wide range of proprietary, industrial, and commercial standards and is comprised of representatives from various national standards organizations.
As per law, Universities do not require AICTE approval. Only institutions which are affiliated to Universities require approval.
