The oldest engineering group in India, IIT Roorkee became based because the College of Civil Engineering in British India in 1847 through the Lieutenant-Governor of the North-Western Provinces, James Thomason, so that it will educate officials and surveyors hired withinside the creation of the Ganges Canal.
