The International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS), Mumbai, formerly known as the Demographic Training and Research Centre (DTRC) till 1970, was established in July 1956 under the joint sponsorship of Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, the Government of India and the United Nations.
IIPS began its journey to academic excellence in July 1956. In addition, the institute was originally known under the designation of Demographic Training and Research Centre (DTRC) i.e. till 1970. From 1970 to 1985 until 1970, it was named until the year 1970. It was then known as International Institute for Population Studies. From 1985, it was called the International Institute for Population Sciences.
Additionally, with the combined efforts of Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, the Government of India and United Nations it has established itself as a premier institute in the Asia and Pacific region. Additionally, the administration control over the institution is in the care by the Ministry of Family and Health Welfare, GoI. Apart from academics, it offers assistance to the Government as well as non-government organizations. Perhaps the goal of this institute would be to become an outstanding research and teaching institution in the field of population sciences that is responsive to changing national and global requirements based on principles of inclusivity, sensitivity and protection of rights.
IIPS University was declared as an deemed university on the 19th of August 1985, under Section 3 of UGC Act, by MHRD, GoI.
The Institute currently offers M.A./M.Sc. in Population Studies, M.Sc. in Biostatistics in Biostatistics and Demography Masters in Population Studies (MPS), M. Phil. as well as a Ph.D. in the field of Population Studies. Additionally, the Institute offers a range of distance-learning courses and add-on courses.
Infrastructure
Library at International Institute for Population Sciences
The principal goal of IIPS library is to facilitate research and educational activities. Therefore, the library houses an extensive collection of books comprising 85456 as well as bound periodicals, 16979 reprintsof 26943 Indexed papers 1457 Seminar papers, 234 Ph.D. Theses, 325 Journals subscribed (Printed) and 4,300 journals subscribed (Online). Furthermore the library is fully automated using the 'System for Library and Information Management 21 Software. In addition, the library features an area of 1105 sq. m. and is located between the first and two floors. In addition, the entire area that the library occupies is heated and contains study rooms with a capability of up to 100. Furthermore the library has a sufficient number of Wi-Fi connections, computers and a well-trained library staff and access to demographic data sources are the strengths that the library has.
Hostel
The Institute offers hostel facilities for girls and boys separately. Additionally the Institute is home to two hostels one of which is six stories and the other three-story, which can accommodate students who are admitted to different classes. Students who are full-time are must stay within the dormitories. Additionally, the rooms are equipped with adequate living and work space. Additionally the rooms are equipped with an attached bathroom and toilet to it. In addition to a common kitchen two kitchenettes are available within the hostel. They are fitted are equipped with Deep Freezer, Fridge, and electric ovens.
In addition, the hostel offers facilities for table tennis, carom and Chess. Facilities for outdoor games and a gymnasium are also accessible on campus. In the hostel, the arrangement for the mess is created by students, in collaboration with the Warden. Medical Facilities at the International Institute for Population Sciences First of all, it is the institute is deemed to offer top-quality health care for its students. This is why the Institute offers general health services to all students as well as employees. Therefore, there are two honorary doctors are were appointed to the Institute to provide medical advice.
Auditorium
The classroom should not be confined to concrete cubicles during all the years of schooling. Additionally the Institute offers a comfortable and fully equipped seminar hallthat has an capacity of 45 people. The seminar hall is used to conduct various co-curricular activities which include workshops and seminars. Additionally, the room has an attractive design that facilitates learning. Furthermore the hall is air-conditioned and is equipped with the most modern technology, including multimedia projectors. It is also designed to ensure that interactive sessions are engaging and efficient.
Computer Lab
The school has well-equipped computer labs that are capable of learning through practical applications. Additionally, it is to say that they study the most recent trends and advancements in the field of computer technology. Furthermore, it is an intelligent class as well as an own library. In turn, it is equipped with ICT that enables learning and teaching to provide an excellent education.
Canteen
The place is extremely inviting for students to take a break for a few minutes and rejuvenate themselves. Additionally, the institution is clean and provides a relaxing space where students can dine in a relaxed and comfortable environment. In addition, the cafeteria serves delicious and tasty dishes for staff and students for a reasonable price. Additionally, RO plant purified water systems are installed in all of the water coolers on campus. In addition to the facilities mentioned above, IIPS also provides facilities that include Sports Coaching, Gymkhana, Food and Catering Services among other services.
IIPS runs an online entrance exam for admitting students to all programs.
In order to be accepted for Master of Population Studies and M.Phil. The students who pass the entrance exam also have to take part in an Interview round.
The admission process to Ph.D. The Ph.D. admission, M.Philor Ph.D. (Full-Time as well as Part-Time) and Post Doctoral Fellowship Programme is based on entrance exam, writing test (research proposition) and a personal interview.
The selection process for MA in the field of Population Science (Distance education) is conducted by the Selection Committee duly constituted by the Director of IIPS.
IIPS has an on-line entrance exam in order to determine if a candidate is pursuing a part-time Ph.D. Candidates should have an academic experience of five years to be eligible to be eligible for the program.
The application can be completed on the internet as well as offline via the official portal for aspiring candidates.
To position IIPS as a premier teaching and research institution in population sciences responsive to emerging national and global needs based on values of inclusion, sensitivity, and rights protection.
Increase the output of graduates to twice of the present output at various levels by 2015 and triple it by 2020. Ensure that the course content, pedagogy, and faculty strength are maintained at international standards. Improve faculty strength and quality to ensure the availability of multidisciplinary knowledge resources and skills for achieving the aforementioned goals.
