The International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS), Mumbai, formerly known as the Demographic Training and Research Centre (DTRC) till 1970, was established in July 1956 under the joint sponsorship of Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, the Government of India and the United Nations.

IIPS began its journey to academic excellence in July 1956. In addition, the institute was originally known under the designation of Demographic Training and Research Centre (DTRC) i.e. till 1970. From 1970 to 1985 until 1970, it was named until the year 1970. It was then known as International Institute for Population Studies. From 1985, it was called the International Institute for Population Sciences.

The Institute currently offers M.A./M.Sc. in Population Studies, M.Sc. in Biostatistics in Biostatistics and Demography Masters in Population Studies (MPS), M. Hostel

The Institute offers hostel facilities for girls and boys separately. Additionally the Institute is home to two hostels one of which is six stories and the other three-story, which can accommodate students who are admitted to different classes. Students who are full-time are must stay within the dormitories. Additionally, the rooms are equipped with adequate living and work space. Additionally the rooms are equipped with an attached bathroom and toilet to it. In addition to a common kitchen two kitchenettes are available within the hostel. They are fitted are equipped with Deep Freezer, Fridge, and electric ovens.

In addition, the hostel offers facilities for table tennis, carom and Chess. Facilities for outdoor games and a gymnasium are also accessible on campus. IIPS runs an online entrance exam for admitting students to all programs.

In order to be accepted for Master of Population Studies and M.Phil. The students who pass the entrance exam also have to take part in an Interview round.

The admission process to Ph.D. The Ph.D. admission, M.Philor Ph.D. (Full-Time as well as Part-Time) and Post Doctoral Fellowship Programme is based on entrance exam, writing test (research proposition) and a personal interview.

The selection process for MA in the field of Population Science (Distance education) is conducted by the Selection Committee duly constituted by the Director of IIPS.

IIPS has an on-line entrance exam in order to determine if a candidate is pursuing a part-time Ph.D. Candidates should have an academic experience of five years to be eligible to be eligible for the program.
