Government of Tamil Nadu by an Act of State Legislature [Act No.43 of 1997] established the Tamil Nadu Dr.Ambedkar Law University for the advancement and dissemination of knowledge in learning, teaching and research in the field of law. His Excellency Shri. K.R. Narayanan, former President of India inaugurated it on September 20, 1997, and the University started from October 3, 1997 onwards.
The University is recognized by the Bar Council of India (BCI) and the University Grants Commission (UGC) (Sect. 2f and 12b of the UGC Act). The University is also a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), Association of Common Wealth Universities, UKe Indian Institute of Public Administration, Nuova Delhi.
Tamilnadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University of courses are offered at various levels like Law Degrees (i.e. BA-LLB, BBA LLB, LLM, LLB, etc.) and Ph.D. and many more. Library
The library is the heart of any academic institution and plays a vital role in all academic activities and more so in legal institutions and law firms. With this in mind, the library was designed and developed by a team of qualified and professional librarians and led by the Library Board. It has a collection of over 19,000 volumes covering a wide range of generals and special legal materials consisting of textbooks, reference books, back issues of newspapers and reports, etc. The library has adopted an open access system to facilitate readers to have easy access and recovery of library resources and information. Help students and researchers find literature and information in their areas of research, general reference, current awareness, and computerized catalog have been introduced.
The School of Excellence in Law (SOEL) was established in the year 2002. It offers a five-year integrated law degree course Viz. B. A. B. L. (Hons). It was primarily intended to provide quality legal education on par with the National Law Schools in the country. The course stress is laid more on how to make law students professionally competent. The database of the IV and V-year students of SOEL is readily available. In order to make a niche in legal education, Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University has established a student–industry interface Centre (SIIC) for opening more avenues in the legal sphere. We already do have the credit of reputed banks and leading law firms in our database. Our first batch of Post Graduate students specializing in Business Law has been recruited by banks through Campus interviews last year.
The University's vision is to reach the zenith of Legal Education, the University as an intense community strives hard to invent and promote research, focus on professionalization of teaching and learning outcomes with a trans-disciplinary approach of social responsibility to achieve the preambular perspective of Social Justice of the Constitution.
Provide students with a blend of critical Legal Outlook and Professional Legal Skills with advanced Research Orientation to make them suitable for chosen vocations both in Professional and NonProfessional Settings in varied avocations. Introduce periodical changes to curricula with suitable E-learining Modules to match with international standards. Enrich the University as a self-reliant with transparent governance, eco-friendly outreach approach.
