Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, also known as SMVDU, was established in 1999 under the Jammu and Kashmir Legislature Act. It is a fully residential university located near the shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi near Katra, Jammu and Kashmir. SMVDU has more than 20 collaborations and has one nursing college (SMVD College of Nursing), four faculties, and 15 schools. It offers undergraduate, postgraduate, integrated, and Ph.D programs in the fields of engineering, science, management, philosophy, and other subjects of current importance, with all technical courses being recognized by AICTE, CIC, and COA.

In 2024, the closing rank for the B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering program went from 51,747 in Round 1 to 61,593 in Round 5. Generally, the final rank in B.Tech, Electronics and Communication Engineering ranges between 63,838 and 75,947. The SMVDU cut-off rank in the field of Computer Science ranges between 50,000 and 65,000, and in the case of other engineering fields, it can range between 60,000 and 80,000.

SMVDU Katra has a training and placement cell that provides excellent facilities to help graduates get placed in top companies. This SMVDU placement cell assists recruiters in conducting pre-placement discussions, tests, and interviews and provides other support from the campus team. As per reports, around 23 recruiters participated in the 2020 placement drive, which is the highest number of participating recruiters compared to previous years.
