Krishna Menon Memorial Government Women’s College has been a distinguished pioneer in the higher education of the women of Kannur, ‘the land of looms and lores’. The College came into existence as a realization of a long cherished dream of the progressive citizens of Kannur, who had campaigned for a women’s college in the public sector to meet the higher educational needs of girls. The history of the College can be traced back to the year 1975, when Krishna Menon Memorial Government Women’s College was founded, setting a landmark in the history of Kannur, transforming a poor backward district into a center of learning and culture. On 16th August 1975, Krishna Menon Memorial Government Women’s College was inaugurated as an Institution affiliated with the University of Calicut, offering affordable, accessible, and value-oriented education to aspiring learners.

Library:

The College General Library was established in 1975 with a total carpet area of 64x32 x2 sq. ft and a seating capacity of seventy-five. The library has a noteworthy collection of printed books in language and literature, humanities, social science, and science. The library maintains reading and reference sections. It remains open on all working days from 9.00 a.m. to 5 p.m. Recently, individual department library collections were shifted to the general library for better library management and user convenience. However, certain departments maintain their own reference library. The Library is well furnished with more than 48000 printed books, 16 journals, 24 magazines, and manuscripts, along with numerous CDs and DVDs. New books in the library are displayed on the new arrivals racks for two weeks for visibility. Open access facility is provided to students, research scholars, and faculty members. Remote access to e-resources for students, researchers, and faculty members is provided through N-LIST of UGC INFLIBNET(eShodhSindhu) which provides more than 6000 e-journals and 1,95,000 e-books. The general library subscribes to leading newspapers and periodicals in Malayalam and English. A collection of Braille materials is maintained for visually impaired students.

Classroom:

ORICE studio classroom is part of the Online Resource Initiative of Collegiate Education (ORICE) program of the Department of Collegiate Education, Govt. of Kerala. This studio is a full-fledged classroom cum studio, which is suitable for the conduct of online-offline classes and video content preparation. The advantage of such a facility is the effective sharing of resources like organizing an online interaction of students with an expert or can be used as a video conferencing platform. Thus, the studio facilitates quality online learning through established online platforms to the teaching and learning communities. Various courses and programs are conducted through the ORICE platform in the last few years. Some of them are the Communicative English course, the Erudite Lecture series, etc. It is also suitable for the conduct of faculty workshops, online meetings, and seminars.

Campus:

The campus has a Wi-Fi facility with a 200 Mbps broadband connection which makes accessing online materials easier. Six wireless access points are installed in various parts of the campus for providing internet access facilities to staff and students. Each wireless access point can connect up to 100 concurrent users. A wired Internet facility is made available on the whole campus. All computers in the departments, classrooms, computer lab, office, library, and hostel are connected through LAN using optical fiber connectivity among the blocks.

Canteen:

The canteen of the college provides all types of snacks, tea, coffee, milk, and lunch to all its stakeholders. It is built in a 1600 square feet area with a sufficient seating capacity for students and staff separately. The mid-day lunch to students is provided for just Rs. 10/-, an unbelievable price that has been highly applauded by many people including the Director of Collegiate Education, who suggested that this could be implemented in other educational institutions as well. Lunch for other staff is priced at Rs. 20/- only. The canteen also provides special dishes like biriyani on all Fridays and on other special occasions. The canteen also uses unwanted wood from the campus as fuel which helps keep the campus clean and tidy.

Girls Hostel:

The College has a hostel that has 16 rooms, a large conference hall, a dining room, and a kitchen with modern equipment. There is a rainwater storage tank and a newly constructed well to meet the water requirement. A clerk/typist, peon, cook, and sanitation worker are on the staff. There are night watchmen and casual sweepers on daily wages. Each room can accommodate three students and it provides them with a healthy atmosphere to study. Students under Kerala State Sports Council Hostel Scheme also stay here.

Auditoriums:

The college has two large auditoriums old and new. The old one is quite large enough to hold more than five hundred people and is built in a more than 5000 square feet area. The new one is under construction and can hold nearly a thousand people in nearly 10000 square feet area. The auditorium is used to hold different cultural festivals, workshops, and seminars both by the stakeholders and outsiders. External people and organizations can hire the auditorium after remitting the required fee to the government. Strict directions are given to the people outside not to damage the clean and green atmosphere of the campus. The waste they produce will have to be taken back by them.

Mission

The mission of this institution is to produce intellectually enlightened, emotionally balanced, morally upright, and socially committed young women who will be the agents of social transformation in India. The education of women has a larger perspective of enhancing self-esteem, ensuring an equal partnership in national development along with men.
