The National Insurance Academy (NIA Pune also known as NIA) is situated in Pune, India. Founded in 1980 by the Finance Department of the Indian government with capital patronage from LIC and the public sector general insurance industry. NIA started MBA education as a lateral diversification in 2004 with Dr. K C Mishra as the founder director and Dr. R K Parchure as MBA Coordinator, who was soon replaced by Dr. S D Totade. After the tenure of Dr. K C Mishra, the academy had Dr. Prathap Oburai from IIM Ahmedabad as the new Director. During his stint here, Dr. Oburai had promised the students to elevate the academy to the top 10 B-Schools of India with strong international collaborations. NIA runs a PGDM course. It provides a dual specialization (Insurance + Finance/Marketing/HR/IT).

NIA was established in 1980 jointly by the Ministry of Finance - Government of India, Life Insurance Corporation of India, General Insurance Corporation of India, The New India Assurance Company, National Insurance Company, United India Insurance Company, and The Oriental Insurance Company on 16th December 1980 in Mumbai to be the institute of excellence in learning and research in Insurance, Pension, and allied areas. The Academy was shifted to Pune on 4th June 1990 with state-of-the-art facilities for learning and research.
The initial years of NIA were dedicated to Management Development Programmes catering to the insurance industry professionals to enhance their management skills and domain expertise. Later, the two-year Post Graduate Diploma in Management course was initiated to fulfill the growing demand for skilled professionals in Insurance and Risk Management. The program offers dual expertise in management and Insurance.
The Academy has a sprawling (approximately 32 acres) campus housing administrative, academic, hostel, and residential facilities amidst lush greenery. The campus is self-sufficient with a Bank, Post Office, Dispensary, Sports, Gymnasium, and Swimming Pool facilities.

Hostel
Hostel facilities are available for only a limited number of students. However, students can easily find affordable accommodation outside the campus if they failed to get the accommodation on the campus itself. Necessary relief in fees is given to such non-resident students. The campus is provided on a priority basis in the following manner:

The library building has a sprawling space of 1600 sq. mts. with central air-conditioning and designated areas for different sections, which stimulate a nice ambiance for reading.
The Library holds knowledge resources predominantly related to Management, Insurance, Finance, and Allied Subjects. Digital collections including E-Journals, Online Databases can be accessed from Institute’s Intranet. Users can access these resources online and can find out the real-time availability of library materials from their desktops.
