The Government Polytechnic College was founded on May 31, 1955, initially known as Bhagalpur School of Engineering under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Bihar. It was later renamed to its current name. At first, the institution offered a Diploma program in Civil Engineering with an intake capacity of 30 students, which was later increased to 60. In 1977, a Diploma program in Agricultural Engineering was introduced with an initial intake capacity of 20 students, subsequently increasing to 30. In 1992, a Diploma program in Textile Technology & Textile Design began with an intake capacity of 30 students, and later in 2008, the branch was renamed Diploma in Textile Engineering. Two more recent and employment-oriented programs, Diploma in Electronics Engineering and Diploma in Computer Science & Engineering, were introduced with an intake capacity of 60 students each.

Admission

Admission to Govt. Polytechnic Bhagalpur is done based on the Diploma Combined Entrance Examination (DCECE) entrance examination which is conducted by the Bihar Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board (BCECEB). The counselling for the same is also driven by BCECEB.

• Visit the official website of BCECEB at bceceboard.bihar.gov.in
• Then click on the ‘Online Application Portal of DCECE’ tab 
• Candidates must then register themselves by clicking on ‘Apply Online
• Next, fill the application form with details such as Name, DoB, educational qualifications etc
• Upload the required documents like Passport photograph, signature etc
• Select the desired course and institute from the list given
• Pay the application fee
• Download the form
• After the entrance exam, qualified students are allotted seats based on the merit list 
• Visit the allotted institute to complete the admission process
