Nagaland University was formed by the parliamentary act number 35 of 1989, which was passed in 1989. The University, following approval from the President of India it became the sole university in the central University of Nagaland. It was however just the foundations and laid a route for the University that was eventually able to begin its operations in 1994, on the sixth of September.

The university, despite being established in 1994, had serious issues until 2010. It waited for its new headquarters in Lumami to be prepared until the year 2010.
