The University of Madras, Institute of Distance Education, Chennai Tamil Nadu was established in the year 1981 as State Public University Educational Institute to provide higher education to build a career in the field of Management, Humanities and Science. The University of Madras, Institute of Distance Education is approved by the reputed UGC and is affiliated with the University of Madras, Chennai. Management of the University of Madras, Institute of Distance Education, Chennai is working under Dr. R. Panchalan (Director).
With the aim to deliver comprehensive education in distance learning mode, the University of Madras set up the Institute of Distance Education (IDE) in the year 1981. The institute offers print as well as digital resources to its students of distance education. The latter is offered through the institute’s efficient Centre for Web-based E-Learning. The institute houses a large network of well-equipped learning centres to offer students with needful guidance. The institute has been recognised by the Distance Education Bureau (DEB), the sole authority on distance education in India.

University of Madras Facilities and Infrastructure

Residential Accommodation

The University of Madras has four guesthouses, which are located in Marina, Guindy, and Taramani Campuses. The guest house adjacent to the Marina Campus Red building is called "Marina International Guesthouse", which offers air-conditioned suites, and single and double rooms. The Guesthouse Human Resource Development Center (HRDC), located next to the Marina Guesthouse, has a VIP suite, air-conditioned rooms (2 n.), and non-air-conditioned rooms (20 n.) for the reception of resources and participants in the Orientation and Refresher Courses from all over the national territory. Foreign students and scholars and guest speakers/participants in seminars, conferences, workshops, training programs, etc., will be accommodated in the international student hostel at the Taramani campus, which is well-connected torts is located within the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences (IBMS) of Madras University. 

Library

The library is aesthetically located in a central place of the college and is very clearly visible in a large and spacious building with an area of 4599 square meters. meters (49,500 square feet). Libraries play a vital role in the development of any society by promoting the cause of university education and research. They meet the information needs of thousands of people.

Computer Lab

The lab was inaugurated with three 3-D printers from Aha 3 D Protocentre 999 models. From the day of its genesis to the present day, the lab has been able to help many students and researchers imprint their ideas into real-world objects.

Multipurpose room

A multipurpose room, part of the hostel complex, with dimensions of 100' x 43' was built in  1985. It is used to organize meetings, seminars, functions organized by the management, cultural programs, holiday functions, meetings, food supplies for examiners, etc.

Sports Facilities

Indoor & outdoor stadiums and well-equipped gym facilities with International standards. The Majestic Indoor Stadium we see today at B.M.S.C.E is the result of the Physical Education Director's vision and hard work and also the encouragement of BMS Management.

Cafe/Mess Facility

Two separate dining halls are available for boys & girls, which accommodate 180 boys & 60 girls at a time. This has both vegetarian and non-vegetarian modern centralized kitchens. In the basement, there are warehouses for food, vegetables, and other products.
