NIFT is one of the most competitive design entrance exams in the country. Approximately 50,000 candidates appear in the entrance exam every year. Candidates aspiring to start design courses at the NIFTs need to have a proper plan as to how, what, and from where they are going to be prepared for the NIFT exam 2026.
The NIFT entrance exam consists of two levels, where the candidates have to appear for a written test first (CAT and GAT). After being shortlisted, the candidates have to appear for a Situation Test / Personal Interview. The preparation for NIFT 2026 will have more layers, such as following the NIFT best books, sample papers, and mock tests. In the last exam, there was a change in the NIFT exam pattern; you also need to incorporate this when preparing for the exam.
General tips to prepare for the NIFT exam
- Familiarize yourself with the NIFT 2026 syllabus and exam pattern - It is very important for you to understand the question types, weightage, duration of the test, and difficulty level. For instance, the GAT test for the B.Des programme carries only 30% of the weightage. You can easily prepare for the paper by getting some books like NIFT Preparation by Arihant. Sometimes, students overdo things in a burst of enthusiasm and gather volumes of material on the topic by buying one book after another. This is unnecessary because all this time can be spent brushing up one's drawing skills.
- Make a plan - once you understand the syllabus or exam pattern, you can make your study plan. One reason you should always make a study plan is because it will keep you focused. For example, you will not want to have a lazy day, for when you have assignments and topics to do on the day, if you do not do them you will simply add them to the next day!
- Take notes - It may be that your notes will not be good to start to with, as you will not know what point to take notes on and what to ignore, but it is ok as it will come to you with practice. The notes that you make will be a ready reckoner that you can refer for quick revision. This is especially useful in the last few weeks before the exam.
- Solve previous years’ question papers - This is needed in order to assess one’s own progress and develop problem solving techniques. Also, the same question usually does not come in the NIFT exam, but some meaning of words might get repeated. So, solving sample papers is worthwhile.
- Take mock tests - You should also take NIFT mock tests to know what to expect in the NIFT Examination. You can mentally prepare yourself for the difficulties you will encounter. Mock tests are also helpful because they will generally have the same types of questions that you will face in the exam. By taking the mock test you will also learn the pattern of the question paper, how to navigate etc.
- Take enough rest - In the excitement of the exam, it is easy to forget about one’s health, as an example in some cases students loose sleep or don’t get sufficient rest. This causes unwanted stress levels in the body, and may slow the mind’s response time, too much stress and the candidate may start hallucinating. So do take proper rest in your preparations, and make sure you are hydrated.
Special Tips to prepare for NIFT (CAT) Creative Ability Test 2026
NIFT CAT is taken in pencil-paper for three hours. In NIFT CAT aspirants draw/make sketches for 3-4 subjective questions and then write the answers for the questions given.
The CAT test for the B.Des course carries 50% weightage and is the most significant part of the entrance exam.
Step-by-Step Preparation Strategies for NIFT CAT:
- Inspiration and Creativity - Candidates should develop the habit of observing things and situations carefully and must memorize them as a mental image. Doing subconscious exercise of this kind will help memory drawings. Observing carefully, will also get candidates to understand the behaviour of different components in a situation and how the components interact. All of this knowledge will not only inspire candidates, but also unleash their creativity.
- Geometrical Shapes - In the world we are in, there are thousands of items of different geometrical shapes. Candidates should learn to draw different geometrical shapes one at a time until they can do all of them.
- Concept Development - The conceptual process must be addressed before the act of drawing can occur. The candidate must build upon their observation and visualization skills. Visualization skill in terms of the ability to envisage how the drawing will look and the story it is telling, and so forth.
- Principles of Composition - The student will work on the balance of different elements and composition of different elements in this drawing. It is important to note that the NIFT exam might ask a candidate to draw in a particular sequence. The practice of composition drawing will come in useful in this respect.
- Product Drawing - Product drawing is the 2D drawing of 3-dimensional objects. Products can be anything from a tiffin box, shoes, spectacles, t-shirt, or washing machine. The candidate should sketch as many products, as this will help the candidate in addressing any question asked about product drawing, if it comes up in the exam.
- Poster Drawing - Compile a list of all of the trending topics and do poster drawings for all of the topics.
- Shading - Understand what shading consists of between reflected light, full light, case shadow, halftone, and shadow edge. If you can understand the aspects of shading you can create an illusion of form, shape, and light to your drawings.
- Coloring - After the student understands the A, B, and C of color, then he/she can begin experimenting with colors.
- Human figures - The subject of your human figures could range anywhere from a relative, a friend, a rickshaw puller, an ice cream vendor, a school security person, an old lady with a ton of wrinkles, etc.
