Osmania University is named after its founder, Nawab Osman Ali Khan, the seventh Nizam of Hyderabad who rather through a farman or Royal Charter, brought the University into existence in 1918. It is the seventh oldest in the Country and third oldest in South India. Though the need for the University for the Hyderabad State was felt, both by the intelligentia and the people for a long time, the initiative came from a civil servant, Sir Akbar Hydari, who was then the Home Secretary to the State Government. Sir Hydari, in a memorandum to the Education Minister in Early 1917, emphasized the need to establish a University of Hyderabad with 'Urdu' as the medium of instruction "as it is the language of the widest currency in India, official language of the State, and it is a language which is understood by a vast majority of the population of the State." There is a two floor Emergency Block in the institute to deal with emergencies. It was established under the PMSSY project in 2012. It consists of a Tier I trauma centre and acute medical care unit with a bed capacity of 96 beds. There are 3 intensive care units with fully equipped triage facilities for disaster management. The EMD facilities are managed and monitored by the Department of Emergency Medicine consisting of 6 faculties, Senior Residents and 12 Emergency Medical officers. Palamuru University has been established in the year 2008 as a State University by statutory enactment to cater to the growing requirements of Higher Education of the region in general and of Mahabubnagar district in particular. The University started functioning from the academic year 2008-09 with the then PG College of Osrnania University at Nlahabubnagar as the nucleus, where in five PG courses were being offered. The New University set out with a vision and plan of action. The Government of Andhra Pradesh established Nalgonda University in the year 2007 vide Government Orders in G.O.19/HE (UE-II) Department, dt: 13/3/2007 by suitably amending the Andhra Pradesh Universities Act 1991 under Section-3(1) in L.A.Bill No.4 of 2007. Kakatiya University was established on 19th August, 1976 to fulfil the aspirations of the Telangana people for higher education. It is located in the historical city, Warangal, the erstwhile seat of the Kakatiya rulers. The founding of the University was in fact a historic event that heralded a new era in the realms of higher education of this region. The erstwhile Post-Graduate Centre of Osmania University was upgraded and named Kakatiya University.
