Our College was born on the 5th of March 1942 when the ongoing Second World War prompted the esteemed Calcutta Vidyasagar College to open two more campuses. One was at Suri, Birbhum and the other one was at Nabadwip, the erstwhile ‘Oxford of the East’. Up to 1948, the college functioned as a branch of the mother institution. It was housed at the Nabadwip Hindu School. A local committee comprising some eminent citizens of Nabadwip ran the fledgling institution, headed by Prof. Madhab Das Chakrabarty of Calcutta Vidyasagar College. Prof. J.K. Chowdhury took over as the Principal on 10.09.1948 when the college obtained an independent status, a full-fledged Governing Body, and a permanent affiliation with Calcutta University.

Infrastructure and Facilities

Boys Hostel:

The college has a boys’ hostel facility which provides good hostel accommodation for the students. SC/ST Boys hostel has been built with the financial assistance of the State Government. It is ready but no student has applied for staying there. It is being utilized for other academic purposes. Whenever SC/ST students will be available, the hostel would be functional.

Medical/Hospital:

The college has a health center with a first aid facility for the students. A first Aid Box is kept at the NCC office and minor injuries or ailments are looked after with the help of it.

Library:

The college has a Library that is the hub of information and it is the treasure of knowledge. It is the nucleus of academic pursuits. Presently in our college library, we have 34000 books, 20 Journals, e-books, and e-journals facilities by INFLIBNET- NLIST around 50 students seating capacity in the reading room, and 4 staff members. The reference section has a good collection of reference books, encyclopedias, dictionaries, scientific journals, etc. Library resources are the stock in the trade of librarians. These are the materials in the library that make services possible. They are the materials that the students come to consult, read, or borrow. Library services are many and varied, but they can be divided into two broad categories namely =Printed‘ (Books, Periodicals, Newspaper, and references resources) and = Non-Printed (CD/DVD, Videos, etc) materials.

Sports:

The college provides the ground for badminton and volleyball. There are arrangements for indoor games like table tennis, carrom, physical workout, and yoga.

I.T Infrastructure:

A computer laboratory has been set up with a pull of as many as thirty computers. The use of a computer is also part of the syllabi of several departments and the admission process is online the students have developed computer awareness and skills to a great extent.

Cafeteria:

The college maintains a canteen where the students can procure cold drinks, tea, and light refreshments. However, the college cannot afford to provide a subsidy.

Auditorium:

The college has a big hall with a capacity of two hundred seats that are used for holding seminars, workshops, or any large gathering.

Admission

The college conducts an online mode of the application process.

The applicant is allowed to edit/ make changes to his/her application

In the case of Foreign candidates, a student visa will be required.

Candidate shall have to pass five recognized subjects, of which one shall be English.

Students of Rabindra Mukta Vidyalaya, National Open School, etc. that are recognized by the Distant Learning Council may apply provided the candidate has passed in 5 (five) recognized subjects, of which one is English.

In the case of Honors courses, a merit list will be prepared based on aggregate plus marks obtained in the subject concerned.

For general courses, only aggregate marks/ percentile is taken into account.

For admission to Honors and General courses, a list of applicants in order of merit is published by the intake capacity.
