Tumakuru District is an administrative district of the Indian state of Karnataka in India. It is the third-largest district in Karnataka by land area, with an area of 10,598 square kilometers, and the fourth largest in terms of population. It's a one-and-a-half-hour drive from Bengaluru the capital of the state. It is famous for its coconut production and is also known as "Kalpataru Nadu". It is the sole discontiguous district within Karnataka (Pavagada Taluk does not have geographic continuity with all of Karnataka's districts). The district was established in 1832, during the time of the British commissioner of Mysuru Sir Mark Cubbon as Chitaldroog Division which included today's Chitradurga as well as Tumkur districts. The district was centered at Tumakuru Major General Richard Stewart Dobbs was the first district collector (term of office from 1835 to) and was the principal in the development of the Munro administrative system. In 1862, the Chitaldroog division was abolished, and Tumakuru (Nandidroog division) and Chitradurga (Nagar Division) were declared distinct districts, by Lewin Bentham-Bowring. The district covers an area of 10,598 square kilometers and was home to 2,678,980 of which 19.62 percent were urban in 2011.
