NLSIU was established under the National Law School of India Act (Karnataka Act 22 of 1986), which was notified in the official Gazette August 29, 1987.
NLSIU was the first National Law University established in India in 1986. The main law school was established with the mission to lead the way in reforms in legal education and to anchor the transformation of the Indian legal system through research and policy intervention.

Cafe/Mess Facility:
Besides the hostel mess, the University is developing a comprehensive plan for all catering offerings on campus which include the Boys Hostel, Girls Hostel, Canteen, and Training Centre areas. In November 2021 we opened the ‘Quess Cafe’ on the Training Centre on a tribulation basis. Located throughout the basketball court, the Cafe has a seating potential of around 60 members and gives quite a few meals and snack options.
Library:
The library is a three-storied building of 30,000 sq. ft. built-up area and houses a collection of over 70,000 volumes. The library houses a collection of over 50,000+ books and 20,000+ journals covering a wide range of general and special subjects.
The Health Centre on campus was set up to attend to immediate necessities of healthcare. Ms. Malini is a qualified Nurse at the Health Centre and resides on campus. The University also has a top-up with Fortis Hospital and GM Hospital in Nagarbhavi, both situated close to the campus, and Sparsh Hospital in Yeshwanthpur, to provide medical attention including hospital care when required.
Student Clubs & Activities:
Students can choose from a range of associations and clubs, to join and discover community on campus. Some associations have been set up by the University, and enjoy a reputation of having included members, several of whom are now Alumni and can be found making significant strides in their areas of specialization. Similarly, there are many other student-led initiatives and clubs that have been formed on campus, many of which are aligned with contemporary issues, concerns and interests.
Sports Facilities:
The University has made several upgrades to its existing sports centers including a brand new 200-meter walking music close to the soccer field. All sports activities centers, inclusive of the Football Field, Basketball Court, Throwball Court, Volleyball Courts, Tennis Court, and the Badminton Courts had been wiped clean up and marked and can be open to students, a team of workers and college from 6 am to nine pm. The University is likewise actively exploring partnerships to install a devoted sports activities center on campus withinside the close to future.
