What is CLAT 2026

The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is a national-level entrance examination for admission to undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) law programmes in India. The Consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs) conducts the CLAT exam every year.

The courses offered through CLAT are 5-year integrated LLB (UG) and one-year LLM (PG) courses. The exam is conducted for admission to 24 NLUs for UG courses and 21 NLUs for PG courses. The list of participating NLUs includes many top law colleges in the country, like NLSIU Bangalore, NALSAR Hyderabad, WBNUJS Kolkata and NLU Jodhpur.

CLAT 2026 Exam Pattern

  1. Passage-based questions: Except for the CLAT Quantitative Techniques section, the remaining four sections will consist of passage-based questions. The CLAT English, CLAT Current Affairs and CLAT Logical Reasoning sections will consist of 450-word passages. The Logical Reasoning section will consist of short passages of about 350 words. Each passage will be followed by a series of questions.
  2. Quantitative Techniques section: This section will consist of short sets of facts, propositions, graphs, pictorial representations, etc. The candidate will have to derive answers from such passages, representations, etc.
  3. Total number of questions and marking scheme of CLAT 2026: The CLAT UG exam will consist of 120 multiple choice questions; each question will carry 1 mark.

According to the schedule, the Consortium of National Language Universities (NLU) will release the CLAT 2026 admit card in the third week of November 2025. The card cannot be downloaded offline. CLAT 2026 Exam Day Guidelines are crucial for every candidate. Carry your CLAT 2026 admit card, valid photo ID, and a passport-size photo. Reach the exam center at least one hour early. Allowed items include a blue/black pen, transparent water bottle, and personal sanitizer. Prohibited items include mobile phones, smartwatches, calculators, notes, and bags. CLAT 2026 cutoff

The CLAT 2026 counselling schedule will be uploaded on the CLAT 2026 official website by the Consortium of NLUs. They will tentatively open the counselling registrations a day after the result is out. After paying the counselling registration fees, candidates will get a link in their login to register for the counselling process. Apart from that, candidates have to indicate their NLU choices at the time of registration for counselling. The consortium is used to holding five rounds, on average, per CLAT counselling. It will release the CLAT 2026 merit list whenever they conduct the counselling round.

Candidates who are in the CLAT 2026 merit list need to pay the confirmation fees to secure their seat. Subsequently, the students have to stick to the deadlines to pay the university fees. to confirm their seat allotment.

CLAT 2026 Counselling

The CLAT 2026 counselling will commence from the last week of December 2025. The candidates who have cleared the entrance exam will be allowed to participate in the counselling process. At the time of counselling, students will have to give a preference for NLUs online where they wish to take admission by the national counselling process.

Separate counselling will be held for UG & PG programmes. A CLAT 2026 seat allotment for each participating NLUs will be done, round-wise, by the authority. As per the number of available seats, the authority will decide the number of rounds that will be there in the CLAT 2026 counselling. The candidates also have to carry their original documents to the center for the verification process.
